Congratulations to Marco Stampanoni on his appointment as Head of CPS

The TOMCAT Team warmly congratulates Marco Stampanoni on his appointment as Head of the PSI Center for Photon Science (CPS), effective 1 December 2026. He will succeed Gabriel Aeppli, who has led CPS since 2014.

As Full Professor at ETH Zürich and Head of the X-ray Tomography Group at PSI since 2004, Marco has made pioneering contributions to X-ray imaging and tomography. His internationally recognised work has played an important role in advancing synchrotron imaging and strengthening PSI’s standing in photon science.

We are particularly proud of Marco’s leadership and the development of the TOMCAT beamlines at the Swiss Light Source (SLS) into one of the world’s leading facilities for synchrotron imaging. His vision and dedication have been instrumental in building TOMCAT into the internationally recognised research platform it is today.

In his new role, Marco will oversee the strategic development of CPS, including the operation and future advancement of its major research facilities and platforms, the promotion of scientific excellence, and the strengthening of national and international partnerships. CPS operates the SLS and SwissFEL, as well as the PICO cleanroom at Switzerland Innovation Park Innovaare and the ETH-PSI Quantum Computing Hub.

From all of us at the TOMCAT Team, we wish you every success in your new role as Head of CPS, Marco! We look forward to continuing our journey together and to seeing what the future holds for photon science at PSI.
