CFD-Simulation of the SINQ-Blanket

Your tasks

In order to support the operational reliability of the SINQ spallation source, it is necessary to better understand the sub-systems of the spallation target. For this purpose, a component of the SINQ spallation target, the so-called Blanket, will be numerically examined - using up to date Finite Element programs - to determine its performance limit. These limits are the maximal thermal load, resulting temperatures and stresses, which are directly linked to the overall operation limits of the SINQ spallation target. The task here is to carry out CFD simulation of the SINQ blanket with ANSYS Fluent. The geometry must be networked and calculated with ANSYS Fluent; User defined Functions, which describe the energy deposition in the individual parts of the blanket will be used as well.

Your profile

  • Field of study: Physics, Mechanical Engineering (at least 4 semesters)
  • Experience in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics
  • Good command in English
  • Interest in accelerators, neutron sources and CFD
