The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is in a «limited operation» state due to the Corona-pandemia
In its media conference on 16 March 2020, the Federal Council communicated the change from the special situation to the extraordinary situation. At the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI, too, all measures decided by the federal government and the canton to protect employees and external service providers are being implemented. For this reason, PSI is currently in restricted operation and all employees for whom this is possible are working from home. PSI maintains a pandemic staff, which meets several times a day to assess the current situation. Based on this assessment, it takes measures to protect employees and external service providers and to ensure proper restricted operations.
Closed to the public
The visitor centre and the student laboratory will remain closed until further notice. The staff restaurant Oase is now only open to employees.
Cancer therapy with protons
The treatment of cancer patients with PSI's proton therapy continues.
Research continues with restrictions
Research is continuing at the Swiss Light Source SLS at PSI. External users can measure their samples partly by remote control. PSI is a member of the Covid-19 Task Force of the ETH Domain, which was established on 19 March. With this initiative, the ETH Domain wants to be a role model in dealing with the pandemic situation. With this in mind, PSI has launched two calls to the research community. On the one hand, the Paul Scherrer Institute lends itself to cooperation with other research groups and industry in order to develop treatments and diagnostics with which Covid-19 can be better combated and society is better equipped for possible future outbreaks. PSI has also launched a call for proposals: Anyone wishing to carry out measurements to investigate the coronavirus at the large-scale research facilities should submit a project.
