International Workshop on Numerical Modelling

The International Workshop on Optical Wave & Waveguide Theory and Numerical Modelling (OWTNM) provides a vivid forum to present and discuss advances in the field of theoretical and computational photonics. The conference format includes invited speakers who cover many different numerical methods applied to a broad diversity of photonic problems. The event also features poster presentations where early-career scientists can present their work.

For the 32nd edition of OWTNM, which took place in Lausanne from the 8th to 10th of April, our PhD students Enrico, Cristina and Mariona attended the workshop to get insights in the field of computational electromagnetics and numerical simulations of photonic devices, and to present their simulation work on the photonic devices designed for the SUGAR and NEON projects.

During these intensive three-day workshop, we attended numerous talks from world experts on a variety of topics, from basic physics to novel photonic applications and devices, from the foundations of electromagnetics to elegant mathematical techniques and efficient numerical methods to tackle Maxwell’s equations.

We also presented our research during multiple poster sessions, where we received a lot of feedback from the conference participants. It was challenging to defend our experimental work to an audience primarily composed of theoretical physicists, but these interactions led to very interesting discussions.

Finally, as part of the conference activity, we enjoyed a nice walk along the Lac Léman, on a very sunny afternoon! We had the chance to visit the Olympic museum and have a nice dinner with a scenic view of the lake. During the evening, the Best Poster award ceremony took place, and we were proud to bring a poster prize back to PSI!
