Bin Xi's research focuses on multiscale modelling and sustainable design of cementitious materials, with particular emphasis on the coupling between material chemistry, microstructure, and transport properties. His work combines thermodynamic modelling, numerical simulation, image-based modelling, machine learning, and multi-objective optimization to understand and predict the long-term performance of cement-based materials.

Research activities
At PSI, Bin works on multiscale numerical modelling of cementitious and geological barrier materials. His research includes thermodynamic modelling using GEMS, reactive transport and diffusion modelling, image-based finite-element simulations, and machine-learning-assisted prediction and optimization.
His current work contributes to European and Swiss research activities related to radioactive waste disposal and sustainable cementitious materials, including studies of cement degradation and diffusion processes, and low-carbon cement formulation.
His previous doctoral research focused on the self-healing behaviour and durability of ultra-high-performance concrete under aggressive environmental conditions and sustained loading.
