Scope of the Study
Triplex is used as the base design material for the following reasons:
- Outstanding properties, namely high temperature strength, good stability under irradiation and reduced oxidation compared to Zr-alloys under accident conditions.
- Promising neutron economy of SiC-based cladding designs.
- A large amount of thermo-mechanical and nuclear data is already available.
Reactor and Fuel Assembly
The study is based on the decommissioned Zion2 reactor, mainly because that reactor is based on the same technology and design generation as the current Swiss PWR reactors.
Scope of the Experimental Programme
Focus is put on better understanding how some of the most relevent properties of SiC/SiC cladding vary as function of temperature and irradiation, namely the thermal conductivity and destructive mechanical test results that can be related to the elasticity modulus (E), the yield stress-strain response (ε, σ) and the rupture stress (εrupture).
