10:30-11:30 Uhr, PSI Bildungszentrum EG6 Towards Monte Carlo based Full Spectrum Modeling of Airborne Gamma-Ray Spectrometry Systems David Breitenmoser, Abteilung Strahlenschutz und Sicherheit, PSI Abstract: By mounting large radiation detectors in an aircraft, airborne gamma-ray spectrometry (AGRS) allows the rapid identification and quantification of natural and man-made radionuclides over large areas. This method has proven to be essential in a broad range of applications including emergency response to severe nuclear accidents, orphan source location or nuclear facility monitoring, among others. In the first part, the seminar will provide an overview about the history and current state of AGRS in Switzerland and abroad, along with an analysis of persisting questions and challenges in calibration and data evaluation. In the second part, we will discuss how we can tackle these challenges by adopting advanced simulation codes and machine learning methods. The seminar will close with a brief discussion about the new opportunities the developed methodology might provide, especially in face of the recent tensions in Ukraine or Israel and the related risks of nuclear incidents. |

10:30-11:30 Uhr, PSI Bildungszentrum EG6 Optimization of pancreatic cancer therapy - Potential and challenges of treatment approaches Christina Stengl, Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology, Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum Abstract: Pancreatic cancer ranks as the seventh leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally, with very limited effective treatment options available. Consequently, there is a pressing demand for expanding the range of treatment alternatives. Recently two emerging treatment methods in the field of radiotherapy have been proposed to improve cancer treatment: carbon-ion radiotherapy and mini-beam irradiation. This seminar aims to offer an insight into both techniques, focusing on the design and construction of a versatile mini-beam collimator and an anthropomorphic pancreas phantom equipped with breathing feature. Various dosimeters, including an ionization chamber, gafchromic films, and optically stimulated luminescence detectors (OSLDs) were used inside the phantom to measure the dose within the pancreas and its organs at risk under different conditions. During the seminar, results obtained from carbon ion irradiations conducted at the Heidelberg Ion Beam Therapy Center (HIT; Heidelberg, Germany) will be presented, giving insight into the motion management strategy gating to compensate for breathing-induced motion in the organs of the phantom. |
