Maximum Security and Efficiency – The New Shielding Cabinet

At the PSI Hotlab, the introduction of the new shielding cabinet marks a significant step toward improving safety and efficiency in handling radioactive liquid waste. Until now, this highly radioactive waste was stored in multiple laboratories, resulting in cumbersome transport routes, increased radiation exposure, and time-consuming inspections. Now, the newly installed, centrally located shielding cabinet ensures that handling is not only safer but also significantly more efficient.

One of the key benefits is the substantial reduction in radiation exposure for personnel. Thanks to a 5 mm lead shielding on the front and side walls, the dose rate remains below 10 µSv/h at a distance of one meter, providing maximum protection for those working with these highly active liquids.

Furthermore, transport routes to other facilities, particularly to the FIXBOX-3 conditioning system, are significantly shortened, minimizing unnecessary radiation exposure and reducing the risk of incidents.

The shielding cabinet also enables faster and safer inspections, as all radioactive liquids are now stored in a central location. Routine radiological controls, such as wipe tests, dose rate measurements, and leakage tests, can now be carried out with considerably less effort. Additionally, valuable laboratory space in the former storage areas is freed up, allowing these areas to be repurposed for research and operational activities.

Beyond safety, the shielding cabinet features a well-thought-out technical design. The individually operable cabinet doors ensure that only the required section is accessible at any given time an additional advantage for radiation protection. Moreover, the cabinet is connected to the existing exhaust air system and equipped with a HEPA filter, ensuring a consistently clean and safe environment.

The conclusion is clear: the shielding cabinet is a true game-changer in handling radioactive liquid waste at the Hotlab. It enhances safety, streamlines workflows, and significantly reduces radiation exposure. At the same time, it improves working conditions and future-proofs the entire waste management process. With this innovation, the Hotlab becomes not only safer but also more modern, faster, and more efficient a major advancement for radiation protection and daily operations.
