Warren Schenler joined the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) as a staff scientist in 2001. He is currently the principal staff member in the Technology Assessment group specializing in economic analysis of electric generation technologies and systems. His core competences include multi-attribute, multi-scenario analysis of electric system performance, decision support using multi-criteria methodologies for structured hierarchies of sustainability criteria, and the design and generation of economic, environmental and social indicators. His other research responsibilities have included heuristic vehicle modeling and analysis of cogeneration, geothermal and wave power, and hydrogen energy systems.

Prior to coming to PSI, he was a research scientist at the Institute for Energy Technology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ), as the principal staff member on a succession of research projects investigating the interrelationship of sustainability issues and electricity planning methodology as part of the Alliance for Global Sustainability. He was responsible for scenario design, research and data collection, scenario modeling, analysis and presentation of results, and advisory group interactions for Swiss and Chinese projects.

Selected projects include contributions to major international energy projects including the EU NEEDS project and the “China Energy Technology Program” (CETP), as well as projects for Swiss industry and government authorities (e.g., Axpo and the Swiss Federal Office of Energy). Other projects within the ETH domain include vehicle-related research (THELMA) and carbon capture and sequestration (CARMA).

Publications include scientific journal articles, book contributions and major PSI project reports (e.g. Integrated Assessment of Sustainable Energy Systems in China (2003), Transition to Hydrogen (2011), and NEEDS reports). His duties also include direct supervision for two PhDs in the field of vehicle energy simulation using multi-criteria analysis of heuristically generated vehicle designs.
Warren Schenler received his PhD in Energy Systems and Policy from the Nuclear Engineering department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His thesis (Full value estimation of electric utility options) and other research work focused on electricity utility analysis, economics and simulation. Nuclear-related work included environmental impact assessment of the Integral Fast Reactor and the combined IFR/LWR fuel cycle. He also holds the BS in Engineering Physics from Oregon State University, and Masters in the Technology and Policy and Operations Research programs at MIT.
