Teguh Citra Asmara is currently a PSI Fellow in Spectroscopy of Novel Materials group at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) under the group leader Dr. Thorsten Schmitt, starting in July 2019. He got his PhD in Physics from National University of Singapore (NUS) in December 2014 under the supervision of Prof. Andrivo Rusydi, Prof. Ariando, and Prof. Thirumalai Venkatesan. His PhD thesis is titled "Study of novel quantum phenomena observed at oxides interfaces", where he studied the electronic structure of oxide interfaces using spectroscopic ellipsometry and optical reflectance spectroscopy. After that, he got a position as a Research Fellow in Singapore Synchrotron Light Source (SSLS) under the supervision of Prof. Andrivo Rusydi and SSLS Director Prof. Mark Breese, where he investigated the anomalous plasmonic and excitonic excitations of niobates using Mueller-Matrix ellipsometry as well as managed the spectroscopic ellipsometry systems of SSLS. Currently, his research at PSI focuses on the study of electronic structures of oxide heterostructures using resonant inelasic x-ray scattering (RIXS). For his research, he has been awarded with several honours such as the 2014 Best Graduate Researcher Award from the Physics Department of NUS and the Materials Research Society of Singapore (MRS-S) Medal for Best PhD Thesis.

Institutional Responsibilities

Conducting research on correlated materials especially oxide heterostructures using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) technique. Supporting external users in their research using the RIXS spectrometer at the ADRESS beamline of Swiss Light Source.

Scientific Research

Teguh Citra Asmara's current research focuses on the emergent phenomena at complex oxide heterostructures. Particularly, he aims to understand the interplay between charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in the phase transitions of rare-earth nickelates (RNiO3). He is also studying the various emergent phenomena that occur when RNiO3 is interfaced with other oxides, such as interfacial charge transfer, magnetic ordering, and even potential superconductivity. The main techniques that he uses are pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) to fabricate the oxide heterostructure samples with atomic layer precision and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to study the intricate momentum-resolved electronic structures of these heterostructures.
