Precautions in case of pregnancy

According to the Swiss legal radiation protection guidelines ('Strahlenschutzverordnung') pregnant women who are exposed to radiation within their professional work may receive a total dosis of 2 mSv and a incorporated dosis of 1 mSv during one pregnancy. For nursing mothers no incorporation at all is allowed. If a person is not categorized as 'exposed to radiation within his/her professional work' the limit is 1 mSv per year independent from gender.

Those values are very unlikely to be received during a normal experiment neither at SLS, SINQ nor SμS. At SLS the acceptable maximum dosis for all experimental areas together is 0.020 mSv / week. Nevertheless it is in your own responsibility if you accept to work in an environment that might expose you to radioactivity in general.

If you have more questions regarding this matter we might bring you into contact with a medical doctor at PSI to give you further advice.
