The Paul Scherrer Institute is with 1400 employees the largest research centre for the natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland and a worldwide leading user laboratory. Its research activities are concentrated on the main topics structure of matter, energy and environmental research as well as human health.

In the Ecosystem Fluxes and Stable Isotopes Group a postdoctoral position is open. The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) within the SINERGIA project "iTREE: Long-term variability of tree growth in a changing environment - identifying physiological mechanisms using stable C and O Isotopes in TREE rings”. iTREE is an interdisciplinary research framework between four different institutes, which enables leading dendro-climatologists, plant physiologists, isotope specialists, and global carbon cycle modelers to capitalize on their existing synergies. The object of the project is to reduce uncertainties related to estimations of tree/forest growth in the context of changing natural environments.

We are looking for a

Postdoctoral Fellow

Tree and Forest Ecophysiological Research

Your tasks

  • Sample collection and isotope analysis in collaboration with other iTREE partners and our technical staff
  • The evaluation, implementation and maintenance of a specific isotope - dendrochronology data base
  • Statistical analyses of the isotope and tree ring width chronologies and meteorological data, provides the needed data sets for the model parameterization
  • Conduct model simulations and evaluate results for plant physiological responses and acclimatization processes
  • Support the PI in the coordination of the whole project by organizing workshops and seminars and play a leading role in the synthesis work of iTREE

Your profile

We seek a candidate with a demonstrated expertise in plant ecophysiology and/or dendrochronology, good computer skills and a solid knowledge in statistics and modeling. A strong interest in the use and interpretation of stable isotopes in tree physiology and tree ring analysis is essential. Hands-on experiences and skills in working with analytical instruments (stable isotope mass spectrometers) are beneficial. To support and sustain the interaction between the project partners in the iTREE consortium very good social (team oriented) and communication skills in English and if possible in German are required. Applicants must have completed a PhD in a relevant field at the time of appointment.

We offer a highly interesting position in an international, interdisciplinary research team, which is in strong interaction with our partner institutes in Bern, Zürich and Birmensdorf as well as with international partners.
