Controlling the electronic surface properties of a material
A recent breakthrough sees for the first time the creation of thin films with controllable electronic properties. This discovery could have a large impact on future applications in sensors and computing. Media release >>
Temperature response in the Altai lags solar forcing
A research team of the Paul Scherrer Institut shows in a recent publication that until 1850 the temperature in the Altai Mountains followed solar activity with a delay of 10 to 30 years. The strong rise in temperature since 1850, however, can only be explained by the increased concentration of the greenhouse gas CO2 in the atmosphere. Media release >>
Superconductivity and Magnetism
From rivals to partners
The wild world of quantum mechanics produces states that are not predicted by the classical theory of physics. Today’s edition of «Science» magazine includes a report of an astonishingly new type of state by an international team of scientists around physicist Michel Kenzelmann from the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland

ETH Researchers determine atomic structure of the mammalian “fatty acid factory”

Promising targets for drug development
Mammalian fatty acid synthase is one of the most complex molecular synthetic machines in human cells. It is a promising target for the development of anti-cancer and anti-obesity drugs and for the treatment of metabolic disorders. Researchers of ETH Zurich have determined the atomic structure of a mammalian fatty acid synthase.
